Mid-summer is peak riding and peak traffic. Ride smart and make the most of it.
The Old McKenzie Pass (OR-242) lava fields and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway are summer-only and worth the wait, alpine air and volcanic views. The passes only open once the snow clears.
Even in summer, Oregon roads go wet fast and the first ten minutes are the most dangerous. Watch for gravel on pass corners and deer or elk on forest roads at dawn and dusk.
